HAIFA, Israel: A 900 year-old sword, believed to have belonged to a Crusader who sailed to the Holy Land, was recovered by an amateur diver on the Mediterranean seabed off of Haifa, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced.

The sword's metre-long blade, hilt and handle, despite being covered with marine organisms, were distinctive enough to be seen after undercurrents shifted the sand it was buried in.

Koby Sharvit, director of the authority's marine archaeology unit, said the discovery's location, a natural cove near the port city of Haifa, suggested it had served as a shelter for seafarers.

"These conditions have attracted merchant ships down the ages, leaving behind rich archaeological finds," he told The Guardian.

The sword will be put on display after it is cleaned and restored.
